UN Declares Police Cooperation Day

New Delhi / New York: The United Nations has officially designated 7 September as the International Day of Police Cooperation, recognizing the vital role of law enforcement in maintaining global peace and security. The day was marked for the first time in 2023, coinciding with the centenary of INTERPOL, which was founded as the International Criminal Police Commission (ICPC) on 7 September 1923.

The UN General Assembly resolution, adopted on 16 December 2022, highlights the urgent need for stronger international collaboration to combat transnational crime, organized crime, cyber threats, and terrorism.

The Need for Global Collaboration

Modern-day crime knows no borders. From cybercrime and terrorism to human trafficking and financial crimes, criminals exploit global systems and weak security points. To effectively respond, national police forces must share intelligence, technology, and best practices with counterparts across the world.

* New technologies: Organized groups misuse digital platforms and social networks to target vulnerable victims and expand illegal businesses.

* Border security: Criminals use stolen IDs and passports to cross frontiers, while human and goods trafficking often involve multiple countries.

* Shared intelligence: Global policing databases and training help close security gaps exploited by criminals.

INTERPOL–UN Partnership

INTERPOL works closely with the United Nations under General Assembly and Security Council mandates, particularly on counter-terrorism and human trafficking. INTERPOL issues UN Special Notices to alert global police agencies about sanctioned individuals and entities, enhancing international vigilance.

Global Policing Goals and UN Agenda 2030

INTERPOL’s Global Policing Goals (GPGs) are closely aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These include:
